The Sleeping's Interview Wrap Up

Doug and Chris of The Sleeping caught up with me on the last day of tour to talk about the band’s latest release and the upcoming holiday season along with the remaining plans they have set for this year leading straight into the New Year.

1. Introduce yourselves and tell me what you do in The Sleeping?

Doug: Hi I’m Douglas and I sing for The Sleeping.
Chris: Hi I’m Chris and I play the piano, keyboard and theremin.

2. How did you come up with the band name?

Doug: The Sleeping came from when we started the band I guess you would say it was an oath to people as a form of staying asleep when it comes to their dreams and not doing what they wanted to do. So we started The Sleeping to have those to be able to break out of that zombie state of mind no matter what they’re struggles may be.
Chris: Doug’s cute.
Doug: F**k yeah I am.

3. Today is the last day of tour, how was it? Get along with everybody?

Chris: Yeah great vibe on and off the road, texting each other every day.
Doug: It’s been a real cool vibe and has all become great friends and all of the dudes in Hollywood Undead have their logo on them and we have theirs on us. So it’s sad that this tour is over, because they’re our best friends and we’re going to miss them.
Chris: Tonight we plan to party.

4. What can you say about your current album?

Doug: It’s called What It Takes and it’s our newest album with our newest members Paul our guitar player and Chris. It’s very hard rock album to listen too.
Chris: It’s very catchy and upbeat and it’s fun to listen to really loudly.

5. Have any favorites off it?

Doug: Chris what’s your favorite?
Chris: My favorite song would probably have to be the last song on it called “Dead Beat”. It was a fun song to write and has a lot of different elements to it.
Doug: I also like that one there’s so much to say about that song. “One Night Stand” which is about sexual relationships - I had written that song in Philly and we won’t discuss that happened there but I did write that, it was cool that’s one of my favorites and I also like “Shallow Lungs” and that’s about drugs and the bridge on it is cool reminds me of Stevie Wonder.

6. The holidays are coming up Thanksgiving and Christmas what do you hope to expect to be under your Christmas trees?

Doug: Well he and I don’t give a crap about Thanksgiving. I’m down for stuffed mushrooms though as for Christmas I really want a PS3, new jeans and shoes and more records for my player and my tattoo artist to come move in with me.
Doug: Hey come here (Calls friends over during interview) this is the clothing companies you have to get into whenever you see this bird you know that – that’s the clothes for you.
Doug: Alright Christmas back on track ready go!
Chris: I want a moped, and record player.

7. What can we expect from you guys for the remainder of this year leading into the New Year?

Doug: We’ll be writing as much as we can and then go and record everything.
Chris: Just tour and write some more and then go and record it once it’s all done.

8. Anything else you’d like to say?

Doug: Yes everyone out there in this world I love and believe in you and take care of those around to and wash daily and triumph over evil I’m Doug I have to run and I would like to tell you one more time believe in yourselves.
Chris: This comes from BOO-YA who are our black jack in Vegas who says Doug is Satan.
Chris: Peace out we’re The Sleeping have fun!

The Chelsea Girls Deliver a Star-Studded Performance at the Roxy Theater

The Chelsea Girls headlined a show at the Roxy Theater on Saturday consisting of an all girl line up, hosted by Carmen Electra. There were a few celebs in attendance including Riki Rachtman, Daisy De La Hoya (Daisy of Love), Carmen Electra, Dave Navarro and former drummer of Guns n' Roses, The Cult and Velvet Revolver, Matt Sorum. There were also go-go dancers wearing nothing but bikinis and ski masks.

The show opened up with stand up comedy. Four female comedians took the stage before the bands and every comedian performed five jokes each.

After the comedians' set, the "Darling Stilettos" went on and delivered a performance reminiscent of a Pussycat Dolls show.

Finally, it was time for the main act. The Chelsea Girls took the stage, the curtains went up and fog machines were set on blast covering the stage in heavy fog. Playing the best songs they never wrote, the band performed Danzig's "Mother", Motley Crue's "Live Wire", Quiet Riot's "Metal health" and Metallica's "Master of Puppets," to name a few.

Highlights of the night included Daisy De La Hoya joining the band onstage to perform a Pat Benatar song titled, "Heartbreaker." Other highlights include former Red Hot Chili Peppers member Dave Navarro joining in on the set playing alongside the Chelsea Girls. Finally, former drummer for Guns n Roses Matt Sorum joined in on the set and took over drums for the last song closing the set.

Here are some shots of Dave Navarro performing with the Chelsea Girls:

Overall, the Chelsea Girls definitely delivered an entertaining performance filled with hot chicks, swords, masks, capes and an all-star lineup. See below for complete footage from the show.

BluPrint Fashion Show Hosts Music and Models in Downtown L.A.

The rooftop of the downtown Standard in Los Angeles was home to fashion models, live music and attendees looking for a good time on Sunday night as BluPrint Clothing, Maia.aiaM Lingerie and Jacob Kozinn debuted creatively sexy runway ensembles.

With the bright city lights serving as their backdrop, music acts took the stage before the fashion show. The Boat Times kicked off the night by performing a string of catchy, upbeat songs. The crowd sipped cocktails and bobbed their heads to the music being played by the Los Angeles group.

The Boat Times performing at the Standard Rooftop

Besides rock music, hip-hop rhythms were delivered by ElaNef and Zeps. The duo busted out with skillful beat-boxing techniques, which definitely got the crowd moving. Straight out of Brooklyn, NY, these guys energized the crowd despite the muzzled sound system and mics that cut in and out.

After the duo finished their set, Enzyme Dynamite and True Justice performed infectious galactic songs about girls and celebrities. Rapper Enzyme Dynamite put on an entertaining show running around and interacting with the crowd. Audience members danced wildly to notable songs including, “Fly Away,” and “U.F.O,” which brought bass thumping beats to the rooftop.

The last to perform was Brooklyn female rapper Dama Nilz, who claims to have “no image, no gimmicks, delivering straight raw shit,” according to her Myspace page. Dama Nilz rapped about the various types of weed, while performing with an in your face swagger.

Finally, it was time for the fashion show. As the show was underway, an even mix of female fashionistas and male attendees rushed to the runway to reserve their spot. The first collection to make its way down the runway was from Maia.aiaM Lingerie, which featured classic looks containing tassels, high waist designs and lace.  The show consisted of mainly two piece collections and see through designs reminiscent of retro/vintage styles. See below for runway snapshots from the Maia.aiaM collection.

Accompanying Maia.aiaM Lingerie designs were suits by Jacob Kozinn, pictured below:

Finally, Julie Machado's BluPrint Clothing was next on the runway, displaying two piece bikinis and sexy dresses. Each of the ensembles featured one of a kind graffiti prints creating hip, edgy urban looks. At the end of the collection, Julie Machado came out and hugged her models (pictured below).

Overall, the show was a success combining a great location, drink specials, sexy designs and entertaining musical acts.View our slide show for complete coverage of the fun-filled event:

Club Nokia Gets Rocked by After Midnight Project, Billy Boy on Poison, JET and Papa Roach

Broken homes, loneliness, blood, sweat, and tears were all themes tossed around inside Club Nokia as the After Midnight Project, Billy Boy on Poison, JET and Papa Roach graced the stage Monday night. What was contained inside was beyond anyone’s wildest imagination.

Once inside, each act became more highly entertaining than the last, with the exception of Billy Boy on Poison. The opening act After Midnight Project brought down the house with their 20 minute stand-off of nothing but jumping, shouting, and getting the crowd pumped for the rest of what would soon be coming to them.

After Midnight Project onstage

Next up sad but desperate act Billy Boy on Poison did a brief sound check and then rocked a total of four songs and the crowd was gladly falling asleep on this band’s set. When the band hit the last song of their shortened set, vocalist Davis Leduke and a concert-goer had a brawl out as the audience member shouted “Shut the F**K up!” Davis responded “Shut the F**K up? That’s a new one.” While the audience member replied back in retaliation “Get the F**K off the stage!” Davis answered “Alright give us 2 seconds!” The band then wrapped up with their last song and the entire crowd of on-lookers booed until every one of them walked off the stage.

Jet onstage

Next on the list was modern rock n’ rollers JET, who accompanied their set-up with a 30-minute mixture of the old and the new, which got the crowd really energized for the headliners Papa Roach. JET’s set comprised of “Get Born,” “Money Mouth”, “17”, “She’s a Genius”, and “Black Hearts (On Fire)” in conclusion playing roughly a total of 13 songs or so.

Papa Roach onstage

As the clock struck 10pm, the time was on the horizon the ultimate breaking point of the entire night. Papa Roach erupted onstage with full force bringing along with them 17-songs consisting of pride, power and emotional circumstances that cannot be explained but through the powerful method of the pit! The first round of tunes had the crowd jumping up and down method while the ending portion of the show consisted of nothing but pure fast energy running in and out of the mosh pit. Front man Jacoby Shaddix responded with various remarks “You like that s**t huh?” down to the last saying of the night “You guys want more? This is the one that started it all.” The band surely but gladly wrapped their performance altogether with “Last Resort,” “Lifeline,” “Hollywood Whore,” “Broken Home,” “Scars,” “I Almost Told You That I Love You,” and then some.

All in all, it was night blasted with nothing but high ranking energy, which kept pulsing long into the night.

We caught up with After Midnight Project for an interview. Check out the footage below:

For a complete transcript of the interview, read below:

The entire act of After Midnight Project spoke to me while on their recent spot in Los Angeles to talk about the band’s creation, current album release and what to expect from them from the remainder of this year and holiday activities.

3. What can be said that hasn’t been said about “Let’s Get Something to Break”?

Christian: That it’s sold 3 million records?
Spencer: But it will be soon!
Jason: We put our hearts and souls into making it spent a lot of time writing the songs and we’re very happy with it. So whoever’s listening to this hope you buy it or if not download it come out to our shows and rock out.
Band: Yeah.

4. How is the current tour going, getting along with everybody?

Band: Yeah it’s going great.
Jason: We’re really close friends with the guys of Papa Roach, so each night it becomes a lot easier to talk to them not be able to feel awkward like “Hey man I was in the opening band “as you see Jacoby covered in sweat.

Spencer: I actually want a portable hair dryer and a inbox portable recorder so I know what I’m doing.
Christian: I want a John Mayor Christmas record I don’t know if he has one out though.
Jason: my mom goes and asks me “Hey Chris tell me what you want anything you want on your Christmas list”. I just want some new jeans and some kick-ass shoes.
As for Thanksgiving I get to fly back and be with my family. I don’t know what else world peace?
Danny: Oh we’re going down the line, my turn uh I want to be able to capture what I’m doing more so I want one of those flip video cameras. I will also be seeing my family on Thanksgiving.
Jason: Actually Will from Aiden stole my soul while out on Warped Tour.
Me: Did you have fun with that?
Jason: It was an interesting night actually I was walking down the alley and saw Will and he was like “Jason come and join the underworld”.
Jason: I came back to the bus and I was covered in sweat and I was just like “Oh man I just saw Will”.
Band: A couple of days later we noticed that you were not the same anymore.
TJ: Well seeing I’m Jewish….
Christian: Really no way?!?
TJ: I don’t know a green card?
Band: Bursts Out Laughing.
Danny: TJ is illegal. (Laughs)
Christian (Grabs recorder and pretends to break it – watch video) – “Take Two!”
Danny: What do you want for Christmas?
Me: I want a new video camera the audio this one isn’t so great.
Band: Why don’t you get a flip video camera?
Me: I read the reviews on that I heard it wasn’t that great.
Band: Oh nooooo BOOOOOOOOOO!

5. What songs can we expect from you guys from tonight’s set list?

Band: Tonight?
Jason: You’re going to hear “Take Me Home”, “Criminal”, “Scream for You”, “Gone Too Long”, and others.

6. Any last words?

TJ: Don’t shoot!
Band: AAAAAAA (Laughs)
Christian: We’ll be on a lot of radio festivals in December and thanks a lot for having us.

Ghoul Patrol Discusses Fan Experiences and Future Plans

Death takes its chances when entering the rock n’ roll zone, allowing metallers Jukka Pihlajaniemi (JP) (vocals) and Jani Rapo (JR) (guitar) caught up with me recently via email to discuss the band’s lyrical meanings, how the band came to be, and everything else thrown in between.

1. How did the band come up with the name Ghoul Patrol, what does it symbolize?
JR: First, it sounded good and second, I wanted some old school horror movie/comics elements to the name. That's about it.

2. Why do you feel Death Metal/Rock/Metal has become complicated?
JP: At least in Finland the situation is that there are simply too many bands - and the overall level/quality of bands is pretty high. Rock 'n' roll and metal are still going strong, but maybe due to the global economy problems labels are afraid of signing anything out of ordinary.

3. What is your best fan experience?
JP: The best experiences are definitely from Scotland. The most memorable is probably one guy who wanted us to sign his prosthetic leg.
JR: ...Sure, and the human pyramid was quite fancy :)
JP: Scottish metalheads really do seem to know every trick in the book to entertain the band playing on stage!

4. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
JP: My lyrics are mostly about politics, human rights, religion - from my point of view. From this perspective the EPs don't differ from each other that much. The main point in the lyrics is not to preach but to give people something to think about.

5. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
JR: I do all the songs by myself and some of the arrangements, Jukka does the lyrics and rests of the arrangements are done with the band. This method seems to work for us.

6. How much of the recording process was laid out before coming into the studio?
JP: We have a pretty good idea of the final result when we enter the studio. Of course we make some new adaptations or tweaks if you will on the fly.

7. What's behind the title and artwork of your most recent release?
JP: 'The 3rd Death Manifest' is our third and final EP. We wanted to state it in the title. It marks the beginning of a new era. We had many different ideas for the cover art but we decided to go with the simple one this time - and it works. I and Jani are responsible for the cover art of Ghoul Patrol.

8. What is your opinion on the Uusimaa Finland music scene?
JP: Competition is insane. Tons of great bands, few labels, limited opportunities to get visibility in the media and way too few venues to play in.

9. Are you happy with the way the new album has turned out, or is there anything that you wish you could go back and change?
JP: There's nothing I would change. We were very excited to work with Matias Kupiainen (Stratovarius) who recorded and produced the latest EP. You always have to analyze afterwards the songs/performances you've done and learn from it. We're constantly developing and looking to the future.
JR: I think there's no such thing as perfect and there are always some stupid little things you want to change afterwards but in "The 3rd Death Manifest" I'm quite pleased. Matias did a great job!

10. How much longer do you think you'll have to wait before nailing that record deal?
JP: This seems to be a question in everyone's mind. Really hard to say - when the economic situation is what it is. Labels are afraid to make even distribution or licensing deals.

11. What can we expect from Ghoul Patrol in 2010?
JP: Ghoul Patrol will start to record the debut full-length album. Also we'll continue playing as many shows as we can - hopefully also abroad and overseas.

12. Where do you see the band say five (5) years from Now?
JP: The aim is of course to make Ghoul Patrol a household name among the metalheads. We'll still continue making albums and playing shows for the best people on the planet.

13. What will be the next single released from your latest release? Is there a set amount of time to wait between the releasing of singles or does the band or the label decide on this?
JP: I don't believe in singles. At least in Finland nobody really buys them and because we haven't got a record deal we don't release them. After we get a deal it will be up to the label whether to release them or not.

14. Anything else you'd like to add?
JR: Death 'n' Roll, All Night Long!

Coffeehouses in the South Bay

These days, coffeehouses are few and far between. Fortunately the South Bay cities offer just a few independent coffeehouses that provide local flair and flavor. These unique coffee shops each offer something different to bring to the table. Four coffeehouses were reviewed over the last month and this is how they stacked up.

Don't Sip and Run at Redondo Beach's Catalina Coffee Company

Located in Redondo Beach just moments away from the surf and sand, this coffeehouse offers ample space on the inside and out for studying, working, or just to relax. It is perfect for those who like fresh coffee as the staff produces its own coffee right on site. The pastries and sandwiches are worth trying. This coffeehouse is best suited for those who love to read as it has its own honor code library. It is also well suited for large study groups and meetings as its floor is furnished with many oversized armchairs and couches. A wonderful place for those who enjoy live performances and poetry, scheduled often. The staff is knowledgeable and efficient and delivers your order.

Grab and Go at Java Man in Hermosa Beach, CA

Located in Hermosa Beach on Pier Ave, this small coffee house is best suited for those taking a stroll with their pet as they offer one dog biscuit per party. It is also a good place to get dessert as fresh desserts are delivered daily from their sister restaurant, the Ocean Diner. The breakfast burritos are worth checking out. The lunch sandwiches along with the lattes were not too flavorful, just average. Its small dining area and busy location is not suited for large study groups but rather for those that would just like to relax with the morning paper. The staff is quick but not too personable. Note that the order must be picked up at the counter. Its small patio is perfect for those who like to relax under the sun with their friends or pet.

The Healthy Bean, for the Green Lifestyle

The Healthy Bean in Torrance is a great coffeehouse for those with sensitive stomachs as their coffees are lower in acid. Health conscious coffee drinkers will be delighted to know that this establishment serves many items low in calories and fat even some vegan and vegetarian options. Give the premade burritos and sandwiches along with salads and soup a try. There is also a frequent buyer card available offering a free beverage after the tenth purchase. The coffee is prepared well and the staff is pleasant and will deliver your order. Due to its location on the busy intersection of Hawthorne and Lomita, it is not suited for those who need silence in order to work. However if working in a loud environment is tolerable, be sure to bring your laptop as they offer free WiFi.

The Blue Butterfly Coffee Co El Segundo, CA

Blue Butterfly Coffee is on Main Street in El Segundo. This eatery offers an extensive food menu featuring crepes, bagel sandwiches, wraps and paninis. They brew their own coffee and they also have a wide selection of coffee beverages at slightly more affordable prices than the more well known coffeehouses. The staff is knowledgeable and is friendly to the newcomers as well as the locals alike. Note that the order must be picked up. Blue Butterfly has a small dining area, best suited for small groups. Its prime location is perfect for those who would like to grab their coffee and take a stroll around quaint downtown El Segundo. Its two patios are perfect for relaxing and watching the planes takeoff from nearby LAX.

The Los Angeles Nut Jobs: The Sleeping, Escape the Fate, Atreyu and Hollywood Undead

This is the night you shall learn to regret because tonight is the night of the undead! Hollywood Undead that is and its counter partners, The Sleeping, Escape the Fate, and Atreyu. But why you ask? Let’s just say tonight, a sea of black t-shirts have a hidden feature just waiting to be unleashed...

The night rolled off to an energetic start with The Sleeping’s slow but steady start-up routine as front man Douglas Robinson demanded the crowd to split down the middle and get ready to charge and charge they did as the drums rolled and guitars riffed and soon the whole floor board as at war running straight at one another breaking out into a series of fist fights left and right.

As the band’s torment continued, it soon came to pass as the next round of entertainers hit the stage hard and quick! Las Vegas go getters Escape the Fate came on and were soon gone as their quick and shortened set consisted of the old and new opening with “Situations”, and closing it out with “This War Is Ours”, minus the other noticeable hits “10 Miles Wide”, and “Something”.

The night rolled right along as the second to the last performers broke the silence yet again but getting the entire venue in an uproar of pure energy ten times the force than The Sleeping could attempt. Orange County rowdy rough riders Atreyu took the stage apart in their 30-40 minute set up comprising of just like Escape the Fate’s both the old and new material that the mosh pit clearly approved every step of the way.

Atreyu wrapped it altogether with hits such as “Exs and Ohs”, “Becoming the Bull”, “Gallows”, “Right Side of the Bed”, and “Lip Gloss and Black”, among a handful of others that the crowd gladly sang along to. But now the unleashing was upon us as the clock struck the final call of the night and the forsaken headliners hopped upon the stage in their gangster rap ensemble presenting themselves as of course Hollywood Undead.

These rap star wannabe’s were nothing more than what was just said “wannabes,” hopping up and down upon the stage running around left and right in their formal wear of hoodies and masks, but soon that was disposed of and they wore nothing more than your average casual attire. Now come on fellas, if the metallers of Slipknot can put up with it you should too.

Overall this night was nothing more, nor nothing less than your average sea of black with black being not of that cold heartfelt world of the emo lifestyle, but this pure blackened darkness of gangster rap.
