The smoke clears and in whispering waves of self-mutilation I can see the dark sky fall to pieces.
The world is sometimes too heavy to breath and the dead surround me like an ocean.
I can’t recognize the reflection looking back through the mirror.
I only grasp the concept of what it’s like to walk through life with a stranger holding a knife to my neck.
The empty shell of a shattered boy I know possess is my new skin.
Pain is my only horizon, hate, is my only form of flattery, ugly is the world around me and nowhere
beyond the infinite infrastructure of the eternal lonely soul can my blackened heart be found.
If you want a glimpse of torment and bittersweet visions delight, I’ll
gladly cut my head off so you can look down the hole.
Nothing there will bring the joyful bliss you crave.
Drinking lighter fluid to start a fire inside my guts, I am on a slow painful ride
through the underbelly of hell and I wont mind if this is where we say goodbye and go our separate ways.

I am inside of you.
Living and breathing.

I am William Control.

2nd Annual California Beer Fest Returns with a BBQ Cook-Off and 100+ Brews

Do you like beer, sun, music, and BBQ? Are you free September 18th? Then get your (gl)ass to Ventura for the second annual California Beer Festival! This year, the second annual California Beer Festival is on Saturday September 18 from 12pm-5pm, in downtown Ventura, Calif., in Mission Park.

Last year one of my first pieces I reported on for Disarray Magazine was the first annual California Beer Festival. It was incredibly well patronized with many beers on tap from all over California, friendly people, and good music.

Last year's festival goers
As with any festival’s first time out there were a couple of little issues that made the day slightly uncomfortable. The first issue was that the event seemed to be oversold with a line wrapping around the block and winding through town of people waiting to get in. The second issue was a lack of port-a-johns which made lines there longer than any line for beer; I don’t know what it is but beer seems to be the only beverage in the world that makes you need to pee more than you actually drank, go figure. This year, the festival organizers seem to be fixing those little problems and then ramping up the fun to be had.

At www.californiabeerfestival.com, you can find listings of what this year has in store for everyone willing to buy the ticket and take the ride. With tickets at just $40 dollars each they are flying out the door and will quickly sell out. This year there will be six bands on two separate stages doubling the good tunes that will float over the grassy park and those enjoying beer. Those in charge of the event have pin pointed one thing missing from a sunny afternoon with friends drinking beer; BBQ! This year at the festival will be a BBQ cook-off with prizes that I am assuming will allow people to taste some homemade cooking from recipes that those entering the contest might have under a literal lock and key.

So we’ve got more music, authentic BBQ, and a promise of more throne rooms for the physics defying brew. What about the beer? Oh don’t you worry folks, there is talk of more than 100 beers for tasting. That is one hundred beers that you can try from all over the state. Some of the things you might look for on the local tip? We’ve got entrants like Anacapa Brewery, which is on Main Street just blocks from the event; within stumbling distance. There is also Telegraph Brewing, Santa Barbara Brewing Company, Island Brewery from Carpinteria (a favorite of mine to visit). We’ve also got brews by Firestone, Wolf Creek, Leinenkugel’s from Wisconsin (toured that beautiful brewery myself), Lost Coast, Sierra Nevada (of course), and Karl Strauss Brewing, which makes the Windansea Hefeweizen, one that blew my mind last year.

They aren’t skimping on the beer, music, or food in the least, and at $40 it is a steal of an afternoon in Ventura. Are they just going to release you after without thought of safety? Not a chance. If you visit the festival’s website you will find that if you are coming from out of town and don’t want to be a DD on this kind of day you can get 1/2 price taxi rides from the event from Gold Coast Cabs, and for those of you coming up from LA or down from Santa Barbara and further then you can get specials on local hotel rooms if you feel like after partying at the local pubs and bars like Anacapa (which is where you’re gonna find me come 5pm) and sleeping it off in town before going home on Sunday.

This year it seems they have thought of everything and I for one cannot wait to go to the event. Last year not a single incident with two drunks, or cutting in line. All I found all day were passionate brewers ready and willing to talk beer and share their brew and love of good beer with you and anyone interested. I had an amazing time shooting, writing, and drinking my way from tent to tent in the grassy park. There were couches and loungers under the massive tree in the middle of the park for those trying to escape the heat and have a few laughs. My experience could not have been better last year with all the friends I made chatting about beer and waiting in line next to people who were all too willing to just talk and shake your hand. It was a day of good times and great beer which can only mean that the festival coming up September 18th in Ventura is only going to be better. This time around, organizers are keeping what worked last year, adding a BBQ cook-off, and of course more brews which is the point of the day; and more toilets.

Visit www.californiabeerfestival.com to buy tickets (THEY WILL SELL OUT SOON), get directions, parking, and more information on cab rides and motel deals to have both a fun and safe trip to sunny Ventura, Calif.

I’ve got my ticket and I had better see you there! You can also find me after at Anacapa Brewery working on my photos, article, and a handcrafted pint at the bar. Prost!

BellaSole Shoes Rescue Women from Painful Heels

Identification, check.
Debit card, check.
Lip gloss, check.
Cell phone, check.
This is every girl’s mental checklist before going out for a night on the town. Now, however, thanks to BellaSole Shoes this essential list just got an addition with their portable shoes.

BellaSole packaging

Portable shoes? Yes, portable shoes for the end of the evening when you can’t imagine taking even one more step in those stilettos. Every girl is guilty of convincing herself that those 5 inch heels (ever notice how this word is so closely spelled to hell?) are the right accessory choice, but by the end of the evening cursing herself and swearing to never make this decision again.

Well, now you don’t have to sacrifice comfort for glamour! The owner and brainchild of BellaSole Shoes, Tina Wong, was inspired by too many nights of hobbling home after a long night out in impossible shoes. How she longed for a more comfortable pair, if only to wear between leaving the club and her front door. Challenged with not much real estate of a small clutch and barely there dress to stash an extra pair of shoes she had an epiphany—foldable compact shoes!

BellaSole Shoes are light and extremely small and come in their own cute wristlet convenient for stashing in your favorite evening bag. They will be your new best friend at the end of the evening when your feet feel like you are walking on daggers. Bella Soles shape is simple and classic and they come in four colors: Chat Noir, Chrome, Shiny Penny and Smoking Gun.

Shoes in a clutch

As a busy girl with an even busier social calendar my feet have been extremely abused over the years, despite weekly pedicures. Whether running to the office, happy hour, a date, or an outing with friends I always insist on wearing shoes that take my average height to one that could rival that of even a super model. So when I heard about Bella Soles I knew my prayers had been answered.

I conveniently ordered them online at BellaSole Shoes and they arrived within a few days. I love getting packages in the mail and especially when they arrive in fashion with zebra print tissue paper! I knew they would be compact but they were even smaller and more lightweight than I had anticipated and came in their very own black wristlet that could also stash your cell phone and lip gloss. I didn’t waste much time trying them out either, I called my girlfriends and organized a spontaneous evening of cocktails and dancing. I stepped out in my favorite pair of Yves Saint Laurent heels that have less than a square inch of leather to precariously keep my feet in contact with a 3½” inch heel - oh the things we do for fashion!
After an evening filled with libations and getting our boogie on out on the dance floor my tootsies were starting to get that oh so familiar ache….

Then, feeling like Houdini, I pulled my Bella Soles out of my small clutch and although I was transformed back to the height I was intended to be, my feet sighed with relief. The normal feeling that the walk back to my car induces was replaced with a delightful new found spring in my step. I made the jaunt back to the car and eventually back home with ease thanks to Bella Soles! We are all guilty of risking our health walking barefoot when we just can’t muster another step in our heels, but Bella Soles will come to your rescue. I’m sure Brittany Spears wishes she had owned a pair of these when those unflattering photos of her barefoot in the gas station bathroom popped up in the tabloids!

I would recommend these fabulous new must have accessory to any girl who has ever suffered from a night on the town and then swore up and down she will wear tennis shoes the next time she goes out. Of course, one always finds herself in the same predicament the next weekend so why not do the smart thing instead and try on some Bella Soles and skip that painful long walk to the car.

Skip the Lines at the Los Angeles Lobster Festival 2010

Last year, we attended the Port of Los Angeles Lobster Festival and we noticed that lines were extremely long. Solution: Purchase VIP tickets. In our article last year, we warned that attendees might wait an hour to get their meal. VIP tickets allowed the Disarray Magazine staff to cut ahead of the line, get a free beer and enjoy our delicious lobster meal while others were still waiting.

"First Class Guests can choose from two options - with and without a lobster meal. With the meal tickets cost $39.00 and without the meal only $25.00. If purchased separately all the First Class benefits would cost more than $50.00." - Jim Hall, Festival Producer

This year, we suggest that attendees spend a bit more cash on a VIP ticket. Read last year's coverage: L.A. Lobster Festival Offers Family Fun

For more information about the event, see below:

First Class Tickets for the Port of Los Angeles Lobster Festival are now on sale. With no increase in price this year, they are widely regarded as the way to go for guests who want to avoid the crowds, get to the head of the line and dine in a secluded area all while supporting a local charity. One-third of the purchase price does directly to Harbor Interfaith Services.

First Class tickets may be ordered three ways: Online at http://lobsterfest.com or by calling Harbor Interfaith at 310-241-0292, at their office at 1002 S. Pacific Ave in San Pedro or in person at the First Class booth during festival hours. Last year profits from First Class ticket sales went to support Harbor Interfaith's food bank and family intervention services and helped feed over 2,000 people for two months.

First Class Guests can choose from two options - with and without a lobster meal. With the meal tickets cost $39.00 and without the meal only $25.00. If purchased separately all the First Class benefits would cost more than $50.00.

First Class guests check-in at a private area at the entrance of the festival, have a special dining area reserved just for them, can come and go all weekend long for no extra charge, and get a special wristband that allows them to buy drinks and pickup meals without waiting in line. The First Class meal includes a slice of watermelon in addition to a 1.25 lb fresh steamed Maine lobster, potatoes, cole slaw, sweet bread roll, butter and lemon wedges. For only $13.00 each they can also add extra lobsters to their plate. First Class guests also enjoy a welcoming beverage with their meal (must be 21 or older for alcohol), a collectable full color poster from rock artist Jeff Nicholas' Uprising Creative and lobster beads. Credit cards are accepted at the First Class booth.

Tickets may be ordered by calling the Harbor Interfaith offices at 310-241-0292 or by going to the festival's secure order page at http://www.lobsterfest.com and click on the "tickets" link at the top of the page. There is no need to order in advance like other festivals, First Class Tickets are available for purchase on site each day.

"Our First Class Ticket is a real bargain. Best of all we're able to deliver the benefits of First Class service and give our guests a choice in meals. A lot of folks told us they would pay a little more for a lot more convenience and that's what a First Class Ticket gives them. We'll still be selling the same great lobster meal for only $18.00 each - a price that has only gone up one buck in six years. There is no better dining and entertainment bargain in Southern California. If you choose the First Class with meal option, you will be saving over $16.00. Compare our First Class ticket with similar offers at other festivals, and see what a good deal it truly is."

The Port of Los Angeles Lobster Festival has raised over $200,000.00 for local non-profit groups. 2009 beneficiaries of the Lobster Festival include Harbor Interfaith Services, Pedro Pet Pals, and the San Pedro Rotary Club.

Live Review: Billy Idol @ The Palladium

Rock N' Roll icon Billy Idol sold out the Palladium in Hollywood on Saturday August 14, drawing an audience between the ages of 15 to 50 years-old. Some concertgoers made the show a family affair and brought their kids to witness the rock star in action. Performing for 34 years in numerous successful bands, Billy Idol was surprisingly active running back and forth around the stage, fist pumping and getting everyone hyped. A shirtless Billy Idol even teased his female fans with seductive songs and thrusting pelvic movements. Face it, should we be surprised that Billy Idol reeled in a massive audience? Of course not. Without a doubt, the Palladium was at maximum capacity, the most packed we've ever seen. Needless to say, amongst the sea of fans, there was not a single person bored at this show. Fans were glad to know that Billy Idol still has it!

Unfortunately, due to crazy traffic in Los Angeles, we arrived at the venue as soon as Billy Idol took the stage. While stuck outside dealing with box office chaos, all that was heard inside the venue was the crowd going nuts. Billy Idol opened his set with "Ready Steady Go," from the Generation X album and played the ever-so-popular, party tune titled, "Dancing with My Self," as his second song. We can only imagine what was going on inside: fans most likely sang along to this song and the female audience most likely went ape s**t.

Finally inside the venue, Billy Idol was on his fourth song, "Flesh for Fantasy". Fans went crazy singing along to every lyric as the rock icon performed hits right after another. Billy Idol played a two hour set and the crowd loved every moment of it. Were there lighters in the air? Check. Were there arms swaying side to side? Check. Were there costume changes? Check.

Billy Idol proved to be not only a rock veteran but a current and relevant artist in an industry where pop-princesses and lip-syncing "artists" are embraced. Billy Idol reminds us of what music used to be and it's good to see that this guy is still rocking.

Setlist
"Ready Steady Go" – Gen X
"Dancing With Myself" – Gen X
"Love Is Strange"
"Flesh for Fantasy"
"Scream"
"Sweet Sixteen"
"Scarred for Life"
"Eyes Without a Face"
"Kings and Queens of the Underground"
"L.A. Woman"
Steve Stevens Solo
"King Rocker" – Gen X
"Running With the Boss Sound" – Gen X
"Blue Highway"

Encore
"White Wedding"
“Rebel Yell”
"Mony Mony"

Live Review: Unified People Fashion Event @ The Penthouse

Unified People celebrated the launch of their fall 2010 line at the Penthouse in Hollywood Friday night. Hundreds of club-goers danced to hip-hop beats and electro-dance tunes from DJ's Sweet P, Christian 10, Shanto, Lunacy, AJ Mora and Defcon. Attendees got a sneak peek at Unified People's hats and t-shirts worn by DJ's and Unified People supporters.

Throughout the night, girls posed in front of the Unified People backdrop in their highest heels wearing stylish dresses. A few timid guys jumped in to take pictures as well.

Downstairs at Highlands, a larger crowd danced to Top 40 songs while awaiting a performance by singer and reality star, Ray J. Due to being double-booked, Ray J canceled his show 20 minutes before he was scheduled to hit the stage, according to Jahi Harris, CEO of Crown Jewel Entertainment. Consequently, Ray J fans were disappointed, but as the night wore on, we could hardly tell as they partied well into the night. Curvaceous go-go dancers gyrated on either side of the venue fueling the energetic vibe throughout the venue.

Overall, the night was well attended and it seemed as though everyone enjoyed themselves. For more information about Unified People, visit:

Shonen Knife Releases English Songs on 8/31

“When I finally got to see them live, I was transformed into a hysterical nine-year-old girl at a Beatles concert.”

- Kurt Cobain discussing Shonen Knife in Rolling Stone

Legendary Japanese pop-punk, all-girl band Shonen Knife will be releasing the English-language version of Free Time on August 31 through Good Charamel Records, founded by Robby Takac of The Goo Goo Dolls. On the same date, they will also release for the first time, English-language, vinyl and digital versions of 2007’s fun! fun! fun!.

With nearly three decades of releases and thousands of shows to their credit, the girls of Shonen Knife know how to deliver hard, yet poppy music, while keeping an element of mellow and kitsch in the mix.

Preparing to launch a month-long U.S. tour, kicking off September 8 in Seattle, the band will play all points in between before winding down October 2 in Buffalo.

The band’s Live At Mohawk Place DVD is available now at indie stores and via the Internet beginning October 19. The live release was recorded during the band’s final stop on the 2009 "Super Group" Tour of North America at Buffalo, NY's Mohawk Place. Highlights include an encore performance by original member Atsuko, 18 songs from their extensive catalog, tunes such as “Giant Kitty,” “Antonio Baka Guy” and “Bear Up Bison,” as well as selections from their Super Group album, including exclusive interview footage. This is a must have item for any Shonen Knife collector.

Busy touring and playing major rock festivals such as Matt Groening’s All Tomorrow’s Festival in the UK, and Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, Texas, the band also found time recently to record tracks for the “Powerpuff Girls” compilation as well as an AC/DC tribute album.

Shonen Knife also contributes 3 tracks to Good Charamel’s I Love J-Rock compilation, where they appear alongside such buzzing Japanese acts as TsuShiMaMiRe, LAZYgunsBRISKY and Molice to name a few. I Love J-Rock will be available on August 31.

Meet Miss California USA Contestant Anna Gutierrez

We recently spoke with one of the contestants of the Miss California USA 2011 pageant and asked her a few questions about her goals, her charity work and what she would do if she was crowned Miss California. Find out what sets "Miss Diamond Bar USA 2011" apart from the other contestants in the pageant.

1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Anna Gutierrez. I am 22 years old and come from a Colombian/American background. I represent Miss Diamond Bar USA 2011 in the Miss California USA 2011 pageant. I attend California State University Fullerton as a Psychology major. I am very energetic, optimistic and passionate. The trait that I am most proud of is my mentality because of how I view and experience life. I am also the type of woman that believes in treating everybody with kindness and respect regardless of flaws perceived by others.

2. When did you first realize you wanted to run for Miss California?

The first time I realized I wanted to run for Miss California was when I was a chubby little girl watching the Miss U.S.A pageant with my mom. Today, realizing that beauty is more than skin deep, I am in the pursuit of a dream that I thought could never be attainable by me. Now, realizing the woman I have developed into being, I feel unstoppable.

3. What qualities do you feel you bring to the table?

I am a woman burning with passion. I see the beauty in people that they themselves fail to see. I believe in equality, love, peace, perseverance, and having philanthropic ideals.

4. What separates you from the other contestants? Advantages?

All the girls are beautiful, talented and philanthropic. I believe what makes me different is the fact that I got to experience and see life through a variety of different eyes. In the past, I saw life through the lenses of a “Geek, compared to society’s standards. Most of my life I was overweight, had braces (can’t forget to mention my lovely headgear), experienced horrible acne and had no fashion sense at all! Who transformed into a woman judged only on her physical appearance. I got to experience life as a spoiled little princess that would get everything her heart ever desired, to also experiencing life as a girl that was left without a home, at a point in her life, that had to live out of a suitcase. I have experienced excelling people’s expectations, as well as disappointing their expectations. I experienced being surrounded by the love of family and friends, to unavoidably feeling the emptiness of solitude. I learned so much from my life experiences and no matter how tough I can recall the situations being, I would relive it all again because that was what developed my mentality of having faith, hope and knowing that you can prevail in all circumstances. Also, it taught me to treat others how I would like to be treated and it achieved my mindset of making people feel appreciated and cared for.

5. What was one of the hardest things you've had to overcome in your life?

I have had a lot of hard factors in my life but I think that in everyone the biggest battle is with the critic you have of yourself. The one that tells you, “You’re not good enough to reach your highest potential.” Winning that battle was the hardest and most rewarding battle I have yet to overcome.

6. Are you involved with any charities and if so, can you tell us what philanthropic efforts you've contributed to?

I was involved in volunteering at the Lanterman Rehabilitation Center until they recently closed down. It was an experience that taught me a lot about the human brain. No matter how low the I.Q of an individual could be or if mentally they were in a different world than everybody else, they still had the capability to experience happiness. That just taught me that happiness is a gift that can be given to all people. Including people that most would think where mentally incapable of achieving. I also was blessed to experience working with “La Obra” a non- profit organization for the poor children in Colombia. They got to experience a Christmas filled with love, toys, music, laughter, food and Santa Clause!! (who was reenacted by my wonderful brother). It was a great experience because the children were so grateful and happy that it didn’t matter how shy or scared they’re personalities were in the beginning, by the end of the day they would show their gratitude and love towards you. My experience of working at a Public Library has taught me a lot as well. You see all types of people at the Public Library. The variations go from rich, homeless, young, old, exceptionally intelligent, to mentally handicap. The library brings them all together, teaching me that everybody has the same needs and aspirations of self completion to their personal development. Also, that all biases can become non-existent in this world.

7. How can people vote for you?

People can come support me at the preliminaries and pageant event at The Palm Springs Riviera Resort on November 20th, 21st and 22nd. More updates can be found at www.misscaliforniausa.com website.

8. What would you do if you won the competition?

If I win the competition, I promise to give my all to show the captivating beauty, ingenuity, congeniality, respect and loyalty that California has to offer.

9. What advice do you have for young contestants who are afraid to compete for Miss California?

I would say, GO FOR IT!!! We are all capable of achieving all of our dreams. We have to remember that our free will gives us the ability to choose what life we want to live and what destiny we want to fulfill. All we need is to be assertive to our goals.

Live Review: Wicker at the Maloof Money Cup

Wicker performed at the Maloof Money Cup Village Stage last Sunday. The band combined electro-trash beats, rock riffs and elements of hip-hop, spitting lyrics as fast as Zach De La Rocha. If Mindless Self Indulgence had a hotter, younger and more energetic cousin, we'd call 'em Wicker.

For those who are unfamiliar with the band, you won't be for long considering Wicker has been playing the Los Angeles circuit and even made several cameos on a popular E! Entertainment reality show called, "Pretty Wild."

Stand-out songs from the event included the party anthem, "People Go Crazy." Other notable songs included "Fight Back," and a new track titled, "Hooligans." To hear what these guys sound like, take a listen below:

We snapped some shots of the band as they performed to a crowd of enthusiastic and energetic fairgoers.

If you want to catch these guys in action, check them out at the Sunset Strip Music Festival:

Rimmel London's Lasting Finish Pro Review

Rimmel London prides itself on being affordable and stylish, offering products that are vibrant in color and long-lasting. Recently, the Rimmel London team sent our guest reviewer, Rachel Green a few nail polishes to test. See what Rachel had to say when she used  the various products over a period of days.

This review was originally published on Rachel's blog Uncurable Craving and republished with her permission.

Rimmel #310 Sunset Orange

This is some color! A nice creamy, mostly opaque (@ 2 coats), bright tangerine. I'll have to report back on how long it lasted. The bottle says up to 10 days. I'd love it if it holds up even 5 days before chipping. I do a lot with my hands, so I'll put the polish through its paces. This color makes me happy.

This nail polish was graciously provided by Disarray Mag and the Rimmel London team. Although, it was free, this never colors my posts. Check them out on Twitter, if you'd like: http://www.twitter.com/disarraymag

On my toes is the quite lovely purple Rimmel Lasting Finish Pro nail polish in Violet Metal. I find it to be a violet with a reddish undertone with a blue iridescent sheen, which is an interesting combo.

I polished my toes 3-days ago, photographed them today and they're still looking great. I did 2 coats of polish with basecoat and topcoat. The polish is said to last up to 10 days. We shall see!

The nail polish price is affordable at $3.99. I'm kinda undecided on the wide brush that Rimmel nail polishes have. On the one hand, I like that less strokes are made yielding smoother application. Conversely, I like thinner brushes for when I try to get the polish close to the skin. I find the brush sets the Rimmel polishes apart and innovative.

All in all, I really like this purple and I'm curious about how it'll look on my fingernails.
NOTE: I received this polish generously from Disarray Magazine.

I do not believe in biased posts and even if I get something free, it won't ever affect my opinion.

So tonight I ended up having to redo my nails because they looked like this. I used Rimmel's Lasting Finish Pro in Sunset Orange.

On the bottle, it says the manicure can last up to 10 days. I'll give it to Rimmel it lasted 3 days then showed wear around the cuticles, at end of nails showing white and some minor chips on nails. I wished the polish lasted more like 6-10 days, but what can ya do?

All I can do is chock it up to the fact that I use my hands a lot, typing, using a cash register, cleaning, but... I still think the polish should last longer especially with the use of base coat and top coat. Sigh. One day I will find a long lasting lacquer. At least, the color is fab!

new notd!

So, I just removed the chipped Rimmel Sunset Orange polish. I did one coat of Rimmel Lasting Finish Pro in Cherry Fashion one coat over base coat and then top coat. I used a teardrop crystal on my ring finger and affixed that with topcoat.

I like this bold cherry color. Reminds me of a classic 40s or 50s lip color. I was impressed that it was opaque at one coat. I'll see if this polish fares better than the last in terms of chipping time.
Polish provided to me free by http://www.twitter.com/disarraymag. This is an unbiased post.
