Exclusive Interview with Biatta Intimates Designer Kim Munoz

Article by Guest Reviewer Isabel Bowser / Creative Director of BIKINI SHELL

With everyone winding down from this last weeks hectic schedule of post L.A. Fashion weekend buzz, Bikini Shell's Creative Director Isabel Bowser was able to catch up with Kim Munoz, the sexy and savvy genius behind this season's collection of Biatta Intimates from the Fall Winter collection 2011 at Sunset Gower Studios and previously at the Peterson Automotive Museum. We had lots of questions to ask her and Ms. Munoz was nice enough to pick up her phone when we rang.

1. Where did you get your inspiration from for this years collection? Was it something specific like a Diva actress or a secluded getaway?

KM: It came from a collaboration of different designers putting their ideas and thoughts to create the line. A big focus with the line and pieces was to make it so that they could be individually worn outside. For example the bustiers can be worn underneath jackets or with jeans. And our babydolls as dresses with tall boots.

2. Yeah that sounds very sexy. Your leopard print with solid lemon babydoll can be worn as a camisole dress and is extremely sexy and fun to wear out day or night this coming summer.

KM: Yes, we like to make our pieces to match outer wear as well and choose the fabrics with the same inspiration

3. What is the most important factor when you design a Biatta Intimates Collection?

KM: We like to look ahead at the season and the current trends in magazines, the colors, what is new for the year ahead and of course what other designers are doing. We also like to create pieces that are understandable to everybody and price affordable fashion.

Published with permission:  Kai He Photography 2011©All Rights Reserved
Price affordable fashion Yes! that's something everybody likes:

4. Do you design for brunettes or blondes?

KM: We design for all Skin types, all shapes and all sizes. In fact Biatta Intimates has a Plus Size Collection.

Well that was a wrap for Kim Munoz and Bikini Shell's Isabel Bowser. It was great to have the opportunity to hear first hand about the brainstorming involved and creativity to handle a collection like Biatta Intimates. Being a mezzanine company with a little under 500k in annual gross sales, they cover a full ground with collections being sold at Sears, Victorias Secrets, Nordstroms and other select boutiques.

Live Review: Black Veil Brides Rock the House of Blues

Black Veil Brides were back home in L.A., performing at the famous House of Blues on the even more famous, Sunset Strip. The band hit the stage at around 9:40p.m. after the crowd chanted “Black Veil Brides” for a good 5 minutes.

As the fog appears behind a thin curtain covering the stage; almost like a ‘wave’, hands rise up into the air with “devil horns,” digital cameras and cell phones. As the curtain dropped, band member silhouettes can be now seen standing one by one on stage. As the lights brightened they were in their usual black clothing, scene black hair and their faces and upper bodies covered in black and white makeup.

Moments after the multiple camera flashes went off; the band went into “All Your Hate,” with singer, Andy Six, holding out the microphone into the crowd for the energetic fans to scream out the chorus. Without pause they go into “We Stitch These Wounds.” By that time the bass player's, Ashley Purdy" microphone stand was decorated with bras, which were thrown on stage. Both guitarists Jinx and Jake Pitts took notice of the cameras and stuck their tongues out for photographers.

The photographers were ushered off the stage after the 2nd song, instead of the 3rd song, and it became clear why only after the band started their 3rd song, "Children Surrender." A quarter of the way in, singer Andy jumped down from the stage and stood in front of the barricade. He stretched his hand as far into the crowd as he can and let the crowd sing the song. The pushing and shoving ensued by the enthusiastic fans as everyone wanted to be close enough to touch Andy Six.

Before going into the 5th song “Sweet Blasphemy,” Andy talked to the crowd giving them advice about how to deal with people who call them fags and how not to be bullied. During the song Andy took a sign from the crowd which read, “Talk shit we love hearing it.”

“When we wrote this song, we were categorized as “emo” and I don’t know why anyone would think of us as emo if we didn’t think of us like that. So whether you like this song or not, this song is called, “Knives and Pens.”

The song ends with the whole band, except drummer, Christian Coma, exiting the stage. Christian performed a few-minute long high powered, energized drum solo. As soon as he finished the crowd cheered and the band came back on stage to wrap up their set with “Perfect Weapon,” a perfect song to finish off the night. Starting with good guitar riffs and a scream to start off the song, the crowd jumped and some even moshed. All of House of Blues sung the chorus and the night ended with Ashley Purdy smashing and destroying his bass guitar. As it broke in half, he threw it into the crowd and left the stage.

After the show many fans stayed in the pit waiting for drum sticks and guitar pics, which eventually the lucky ones got. Andy Six was later seen near the bar as excited fans crowded around him. He stayed for about 5 minutes talking with the fans and told them about the meet and greet. The lined formed around the inside of the House of Blues and shortly after the band came out, signed things and spoke with fans.

Though the concert only consisted of eight songs and a drum solo, the band gave the crowd a night to remember, with memorable moments including Andy Six going into the crowd multiple times, Purdy smashing his guitar and most importantly, the band taking the time to meet their fans. What fan would be disappointed after a night like that?

The Vegan Stoner: Putting the Fun Back Into Food

As we all know cooking can be quite intimidating and complex with the often stern culinary world not helping to ease the process. This is where Graham Haynes’ appetizing website comes in handy, with its whimsical graphics and simple recipes (often using less than 6 ingredients). We recently chatted with him about his unique recipe blog: The Vegan Stoner. Yes you heard right, but all bad references aside, this is good stuff, promise!

Photo provided by The Vegan Stoner

1) What were your motives for starting the blog?

We created The Vegan Stoner with hopes of influencing the way recipes are written. We found the standard format of extensive ingredient lists with exact measurements, combined with dense paragraphs of detailed steps, to be somewhat intimidating when trying to cook a quick dinner. So we created short visual ingredient lists and simple directions to encourage improvisation. Basically, the blog was created under the premise that recipes should be templates, almost like an outline, that the viewer uses to spark creativity.

2) What are your overall goals?

Our overall goals are to make veganism accessible to the everyday person, and to show people that they don't have to give up their guilty pleasures when they become vegan. There are a multitude of ways to approach veganism, and cooking vegan can be fast, cheap, and fun.

3) Who do you most wish to work with?

We would most like to work with publishers to help us with our cookbook. From a design perspective, it might be interesting to collaborate with cooks, restaurants, and vegan brands to help make veganism more accessible and appealing.

4) How did you come up with the funny blog title?

It was a comical way for us to describe recipes made for lazy or busy vegans. We created the aesthetics around the inspiration we gathered from friends and people whom embody the blog's title.

5) Are you vegan? If so, for how long and why?

One of us has been vegan for around five years based on personal views of environmental, socio-political, and animal rights issues. The other became vegan after eating vegan occasionally, later becoming vegan for health reasons.

6) Which one of your recipes most relates to your personality and why?

I would be the Spaghetti Squash because I like recipes that have very few ingredients and that are a little unusual. Sarah would be the Granola Bowl because she has one every morning, without fail.

7) What is your next big project?

As far as The Vegan Stoner, we are currently working on an online store and a cookbook. As far as our design studio, we are currently creating products for our design store, a public art piece, client work, and renovating the SG studio.

The Great Gatsby Goes Digital

Hipsters love classic novels and pretending they still play classic video games. So it’s no surprise that a 1980s style Nintendo Entertainment System game based on F.Scott Fitzergald's, The Great Gatsby, is a cult hit on the Internet. The fact that it's free also helps. The novel (or the CliffsNotes version), has been compulsory reading for American college and high school students for decades.

The 1925 novel has been made into six feature films. A seventh film directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire, is currently in production.

Game screenshot

The game is set in the 1920s and as the digital version of Nick Carraway, you search for Gatsby, throw your hat at enemies and down Prohibition era martinis. The start screen pays homage to the novel’s original cover, iconic as the novel itself. The game's soundtrack is also available for download. While this game pretends to be some long lost Japanese Nintendo cartridge, the game is actually of contemporary vintage.
Game Over, Old Sport | The Economist

What classic literary work would you like to see in literary form? A Zelda-esque maze version of Kafka’s The Castle?

Give it a whirl, old sport.

Denim of Virtue Takes L.A. Fashion Week Runway

L.A. Fashion Weekend kicked off day one of its three day event at Sunset Gower Studios Friday night showcasing Denim of Virtue jeans. Erik Estrada and Ron Jeremy were in attendance. Before the fashion show, we hung out with Elizabeth Bae, president and creative director of the clothing company.

Ron Jeremy

Elizabeth Bae

Bae, the young face behind the line, could easily be mistaken as one of the models. When asked if she was excited to step onto the runway after her line’s debut, Bae seemed timid. Who wouldn’t be? As we sipped our drinks from the open bar and watched as Ron Jeremy made his way through the venue, an excited Bae explained that her line has been around for about five years. When asked about her motivations for starting the line, she responded, “I was born into it.”

Elizabeth Bae
Denim of Virtue is not a bad thing to be “born into.” The line has a long list of celebrities who’ve been spotted wearing DOV jeans, including Kristen Stewart, Mary Kate Olsen, Fergie, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Carmen Electra, Miley Cyrus and Hillary Duff, among others.

It wasn’t long before an announcement instructed everyone to take their seats as the fashion show was about to begin. First on the runway, Denim of Virtue.

Some of our favorite looks include:

5 Tips to Surviving the Las Vegas Nightclub and Bar Tradeshow

Booze, booze, and more booze. Throughout my career as a marketing director, never have I ever been to a tradeshow where drinking was not only supported, but heavily encouraged. No, I am not complaining, in fact, the Nightclub and Bar Convention and Tradeshow in Las Vegas is one of my all time favorite trade shows and should be a requirement for anyone working in the nightlife, bar, and club industry.

One of my favorite aspects of the show is the aura and ambiance of the whole show itself. Nearly every vendor and exhibitor I visited wore a smile, was uber friendly, and was eager to inform you on their product or service. By "inform" I mainly mean try, taste, and sample. It's not only the well known recognizable brands, but also the start ups who are exhibiting and eager to turn you into a loyal customer. Thinking of attending next year for the first time?

Below are five tips you should consider:

1) Do not come on an empty stomach! In fact, hit up Vegas' buffets prior to entering the show. There are dozens of spirit brands who want you to try their brands, and you don't want to be rude of course, however, after the 30th shot, it might be difficult to network properly or physically walk out of the show.

2) Plan on being there for the majority of the time. This isn't one of those shows where you can arrive late, pick up some marketing material and your done. Attending both days is highly encouraged, as there are hundreds of booths for you to visit and meet.

3) Don't come solo. There is always power in numbers, but with this show, I recommend inviting clients, your marketing team, and anyone else who you think might benefit from the show.

4) Make sure your badge is in plain sight. The NCB show uses the scan technology which reads your badge for marketing purposes. Wearing your badge informs the exhibitor the company your with, as well as your position in the company, which ultimately makes the introductions easier.

5) Collect literature samples. Environmentalist are going to hate me for this, but I highly recommend collecting literature samples from most vendors. Even if you already have a preferred furniture vendor, or alcohol sponsor, you never know when it will come in handy. Take plenty of business cards as well, you can never have too many business cards.

Overall, the show was a success and I cannot wait to attend next year.
