Get Bikini-Ready with Tips from biKa

AmbiKa Sanjana
Summer is officially here and if you're like most women, selecting a bikini can sometimes feel like a daunting task. Luckily, with tips from AmbiKa Sanjana, creator and designer of couture bikinis at biKa, picking a bikini is easy when you know what to look for and how to get bikini-ready. Feel confident and look great with advice from AmbiKa.

Tell us a little about BiKa . What influenced you to start a new line?
I lived my entire life by oceans, from India, Miami to Los Angeles. Frequenting a lot of beach destinations throughout my travels, I noticed a lack of couture swimwear. I wanted to create a bikini that one would want to wear on their honeymoon, birthday pool party or yacht in San Tropez... The idea was to design bikinis that would make that special day even more memorable.

What inspires your designs?
I draw a lot of inspiration from my country while using the ancient techniques of embellishment in a contemporary style. Archetypal motifs are a part of my heritage. The paisley, lotus and peacock are reoccurring patterns found in the tapestry of Indian handicraft. Each with its own strong symbolism: the lotus stands for purity and divinity, paisley represents fertility and abundance, and peacock embodies royalty and compassion.

What are your favorite bikini colors this summer?
My favorite bikini colors this summer are purple and khaki.

Can you give us an idea of how much your bikinis cost?
My price point is between $170-$220

The last time we saw you was at Project Ethos at L.A. Fashion Week. Will there be a fashion show featuring BiKa Baazar any time soon?
The next fashion show for biKa will be @ Miami Swim Week July 16th-20th

What separates your bikini designs from the others?
My bikinis have a unique blend of traditional Indian handwork and contemporary/classic bikini styles. They are all 100% hand made.

What advice can you offer girls who are a bit self-conscious about putting on a bikini?
Monochinis are a little more covered yet give you that sexy edge! Slowly build your confidence by wearing a glamorous bikini and getting tons of compliments!

What are some basic bikini-tips to ensure girls look great in their swimwear?
Find a bikini that best suits your body type, make sure you are smooth and bikini waxed & exude confidence!

What are five summer must-haves every girl should invest in?
Five summer must haves for every girl would be 1) A biKa bikini 2) Diva Sunglasses 3) Bejeweled Flip Flops 4) Hawaiian Tropic dark tanning Oil 5) Moroccon Oil for replenishing the hair.

How do you get “bikini-ready” for summer?
Balanced diet, cardio and toning regime, plenty of hydration and rest!!!

Where can readers find out more about BiKa?
Readers can find out more about biKa at our website www.biKabazaar.com or email us: info@biKabazaar.com

Is there anything else you would like to add?
biKa bikinis are available now on our e-boutique @ biKabazaar.com

Do you have your own summer bikini regimen? What do you think of biKa bikinis? Let us know in the comments section!

Atmosphere Embarks on "The Family Vacation" Tour

There are few reputations that stand up to scrutiny in the music industry. There are even fewer that stand up to that same scrutiny in the amorphous and mired world of indie hip-hop. Dessa Darling told me once that the idea of indie or mainstream in today’s lyrical landscape is a moot point. With digital distribution and the social networking of the internet age, indie doesn’t mean unknown, it means independent. This definition is not more apparent than with legends of the industry like Atmosphere, flagship and founding artists of Rhymesayers Entertainment, who hand-carved their niche of the rap world, cementing their legacy with EP’s, LP’s, free downloads, and seemingly endless tours across the world. From Minne-hopelessness, Minne(snow)ta, Slug and Ant are bringing their unquestionable talents to Los Angeles in their Greek Theatre debut on the second leg of the Family Vacation Tour on August 26, with Rhymesayers family members Evidence, Blueprint, and DJ Babu in a show that the smart money is betting will be sold out not to long after $35 tickets go up for sale.

My journey with Atmosphere began years ago laying on the grass in Alaska. It was the summer of 2005 and as I stared up at the clouds in a light blue sky on the Kenai Peninsula, I heard the beats of Ant wander out through the open windows of the house I was staying at with 20 other people for the summer. Will, an old friend now, had put on “God Loves Ugly,” and I rose from the grass in wonder.
“What is that?” I asked.
“Atmosphere.” Will responded.

It was over after that. I went inside and just listened. Will then let me borrow “Seven’s Travels” and he had to pry them both from my hands at the end of the summer. I bought up everything I could find of theirs on my weekly trips to Anchorage. Fast forward to that winter and I found myself in Wisconsin driving the two hours to Milwaukee to see Slug and Ant perform at the Pabst Blue Ribbon Theater with future favorites of mine: Mac Lethal, Joe Good, Los Nativos, and an albino Muslim named Brother Ali.

That summer so many years ago, led not just to those two albums and a fandom of Rhymesayers, but opened my mind to socially and emotionally-conscious hip-hop artists of many stripes. Black Clover and DOOMTREE records rounded out my record label favorites and I have been on an album buying bender over the years. Atmosphere was the catalyst for an eye-opening ride in to the bowels of hip-hop obscurity to mine lyrical and musical gold. I have been defined by the music I listen to, as many of you have, and it all began on the grass at mile marker 45.5 in 2005 and a little album called God Loves Ugly.

I now own just about everything by everyone on any one of the labels mentioned, but my diehard status for Atmosphere is still at the heart of my indie-fan status. The Rhymesayers family is not just the artists on the label, but everyone from friends and family to the fans themselves; we’re all a family. In this manner, Atmosphere shows are more of a reunion than concert. Among the fans there is the regular battle for who is a bigger fan, but you feel like you’re always among friends. Slug and Ant perform their musical catharsis knowing that at any moment they could just cut the track off and let the audience finish the last two minutes as a collective. It is not just two turn tables and a microphone, either. Oh, Ant is there, don’t get me wrong, but Atmosphere brings the whole band along for a truly live show. It is something of an event to hear your favorite rap bangers performed with the accompaniment of horns, guitars, drums (the original beat machine), and keys.

Atmosphere is a fearless group. Ant and Slug have never shied away from taking risks together, with side projects, or in solo albums. The sound they have now has classic Atmosphere at its core, but it is music made by grown-ass-men who are wiser and more retrospective in their creations. One can see a clear shift in sound from the likes of “Lucy Ford: The Atmosphere EP’s” to their newest album, “The Family Sign.” Both albums are vividly personal and honest in their tracks, but with their latter albums there seems to be a man looking back fondly, and not the man scowling forward in defiance of the former. Atmosphere has now established themselves as mythical monoliths in the industry, regularly sell-out entire tours, and often times before they play the first show. That aside, the success, they are men with families, crews, people who love them, hate them, have hurt them, and those who have saved them. This newest album is a reflection on the people in their lives and addresses that “family” is as much about loyalty as it is about blood. All the years in the game have created men whose music reflects the wisdom and perspective that comes with the age time begets.

This is one thing I see in this band, I see in myself, that I find in few other groups. When I was 20 and heard tracks like “Trying to Find a Balance” and “Fuck You Lucy,” I was that guy - that angst-filled post-teen with the weight of the world on my shoulders and in my heart. I felt my struggle echoed by an MC and a DJ. I felt that the swagger, the satire, and the crass editorializing of life found in those tracks were my theme music. I can listen to “You Can’t Imagine How Much Fun We’re Having,” and I get the nostalgia-whiplash that comes from having these tracks burned in to your daily life. Now, years later, I can listen to “The Family Sign” and I feel that same mirrored image, again. I can feel the love, the heartbreak, and the great appreciation for those that took the journey with us to get to the places where we are. There is no replacing those down-and-outer moments that people dusted us off after. It took a village to get us to where we are and those that burned the bridges can just fuck off and enjoy their island.

These two men are about 40 now. They have been proving and re-proving their prolific skills since the early nineties. No one’s been betting on them falling off, but you expect it in the back of your mind. Waiting for that disappointing album, that lack of heart maybe, it hasn’t come yet. Their fan base is thick as thieves and are the ones for whom each new album stands as a dog-eared page in the book of life, more than just an EP or an LP. Atmosphere is at the center of every midwest hip-hop fan’s discovery process. I doubt you can find a single act that didn’t have a brush with Atmosphere in their career just before they broke out. They are the Kevin Bacon of hip-hop today; it’s always less than six jumps to get to them. Slug and Ant sit atop an empire that Spawn, a former group member, called “a pursuit that seemed so insurmountable.”

Atmosphere has an accessibility and an appreciation for their (fan)ily that bands of this stature often let go to their heads. This is indeed a show the fans already know about, having marked the date on their calendars in big red letters. If you’re a casual listener, then I suggest you get your tickets ASAP, because guys like me won’t let those tickets sit unclaimed any longer than it takes to whip out our debit cards or find a babysitter.

Addendum: If you don’t think this enough to bring you out for a ridiculous show, then remember that they are bringing with them Evidence, Blueprint, DJ Babu, and special guests. The entirety of this line-up will be putting on a hip-hop clinic. Blueprint’s newest album, “Adventures in Counter-Culture,” is an apathetic commentary on a pop-obsessed culture. Riddled with cynicism and shots taken at a sad political landscape, Blueprint is an eye-opening, conscious rapper who will make you bob your head and raise your hands along with the experimental beats. The single “Radio-Inactive” will drop your jaw, friends.

Oh yeah, and there is the LA-native, and new signee to Rhymesayers, Evidence along with fellow Dilated Peoples band member DJ Babu. Evidence is a Grammy-winning producer from Venice and brings the LA hip-hop sound with a cogent commentary that few can mess with on his level. The man, Michael, has the LA look, too. With the hoodied fans he has, he could easily get lost in the sea of like-dressed, and minded, individuals. But it is less about the look and more about rapping and creating music that connects with people that drives Michael, who is perpetually grinding it out in the studio with “Cats & Dogs” or even his collaboration with The Alchemist, on “Stepbrothers.”

Summer Survival: Pick the Most Breathable Fabrics

Summer is inching closer, and while we're all psyched for the perpetually warm weather ahead after a tough winter, pretty soon it's inevitable that the heat, humidity and summer sun will leave us feeling, well, less than fresh.

Chrissy Volk, wardrobe consultant for Adahlia Volk has put together a cheat-sheet for navigating through the best, most breatheable fabrics for the season. Who ever looks at clothing "ingredient" listings on the tag - well, this season think of it as your guide to "cool."

SUMMER FABRIC "INGREDIENTS"

DENIM
  • COTTON + STRETCH = CUTE BUTT: Cotton jeans are the lightest for summer because they are airy and breathable, however, jeans with a small content of stretch are the most flattering. They will move with your body and it’s movements.
  • BEST DENIM BLENDS: Chrissy suggests denim with a high cotton content, and small synthetic content. A jean with either a 98% cotton/2% lycra or 96 % cotton/4% Lycra fabric, is a good combination. Joe’s Jeans, Seven For all Mankind, Citizen, Gap are all great for this content!
TEES AND TANKS
  • SOFTEST TEES: Cotton tees and tanks are favored in the summer time because it is so breathable. Look for Pima and Supima Cotton - they are the softest cottons.
  • FABRIC BLENDS AND THE "WEAR" OF YOUR FAVE SHIRTS: Combination fabric blends are often used so that garments will retain shape and remain durable over a period of time. Cotton blended with polyester, for instance, will retain its shape well and will also resist shrinkage.
  • SURPRISE FABRIC TO LOOK FOR: Look for Rayon! It drapes well and keeps its shape, even when wet.
  • SLIMMING TEES AND TANKS: If you are looking for tank that holds it shape day after day, Chrissy personally love James Perse, Target, or BP a Nordstrom brand. They are a Cotton/Spandex blend so you can throw them on day after day, and they will hold their shape very well. The blend you should look for is 94% cotton, 6% spandex for a more tight fitting, yet slimming, tee or tank.
DRESSES
  • CAN'T GO WRONG AIRY DRESSES: 100% cotton is the way to go for light and airy dresses!
  • DRESSIER "DRESS"ING: For dressier occassions, ditch the polyester blends and look for 100% silk, which is more breatheable and cool! Another option could be a chiffon (which is made from either silk or nylon), which is also breatheable and light. Look for a lining in an acetate or nylon blend.
  • BODY CON OPTIONS: If you do love a tighter fit, opt for a poly-blend with Spandex, it allows for more flexibility in the fabric and pulls moisture away from the skin, making cooler than just polyester alone.

Summer Fashion Tips: Malibu Beach Style

Since the 1930s, Hollywood hotshots have considered Malibu their home away from home. Malibu Colony, the famous gated community that opened in 1929, has served as an escape for everyone from Gloria Swanson to Barbara Streisand.

But despite the glut of glamorous residents, this beach-side enclave remains relatively laid-back. After surfing or relaxing by the ocean, you can tone up and rejuvenate your senses at The Ranch at Live Oak spa. For the more culinary-minded, dinner at Savory or stargazing at Nobu are musts, and the culturally-inclined can expand their knowledge of Greek and Roman history at the Getty Villa.

In your overnight bag? Think casual with a capital “C,” mixed with a Boho-chic vibe. Forget the heels and gowns—ground yourself in flat sandals and give in to your groovy side!

COUPONING CHIC 2.0: Savvy Fashionable Discounts Right From Your Laptop and Phone

We've all heard of coupon snipping for groceries... (did you watch Wednesday’s Extreme Couponing on TLC and do you remember the couponing champion that bought hundreds of dollars of groceries and made money instead?), but is it possible to really shop ‘til you drop without any of the guilt at your favorite department store?
Chrissy Volk, wardrobe consultant for Adahlia Volk, says YES!

It can be easy to save big – even if your favorite store isn’t on clearance yet! Chrissy Volk shares her favorite tips (used with her clients!) to shop Diane von Furstenberg sans credit card debt. You can now enjoy your favorite pieces, before they are out of season!
First things first...

SAVE A BUNDLE IN THE TIME IT TAKES YOU TO TURN ON YOUR SMART PHONE:
  1. GET APP-Y: The CouponClipper and Deals apps shows you deals that are going on around you - load it up post-mall arrival! http://clippermagazine.com/iPhone/
  2. NO CLIPPING REQUIRED: Did know that you can bring your smart phone and your cashier can scan the barcode for the promotion/coupon right from your phone. Try the Coupon Sherpa app which lists over 120 retailers -- you just click, scan and save! Download your favorite store's app as well - many times they offer scanable coupons direct from their platform! http://www.couponsherpa.com/mobile-coupons/
  3. CLIP... ERRR CLICK AND COMPARE!: Download any number of price comparison apps – Chrissy likes Shop Savvy Barcode Scanner and TheFind, which scans the item’s SKU number and price compares with other retailers, so you can find the best deal. http://shopsavvy.mobi/ and http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/shopping-by-the-find/id397038993?mt=8
  4. BE SOCIAL:  “Like” your favorite stores on Facebook – the same goes for Twitter followers as well. GAP and Macy's among others, may offer special sales for those that are loyal fans.
  5. PRINT AND GO: Like the feel of a 30% off coupon between your fingers? There are websites that allow you print coupons and use them for in-store savings. For example, couponcabin.com will allow you print current coupons for Target, Payless, the Limited, etc. FlamingoWorld.com is similar and features relevant coupons that are being offered at specific retailers.
UN-TECHY TIPS THAT WORK:
  1. DON'T SAY NO TO OFFERING HOME ADDRESS: Next time you’re in the store - don’t say no to offering your email and home address. Many retailers still send out coupons in the mail. Some stores even send 20% off coupons on a weekly basis, i.e. Lord and Taylor.
  2. GETTING A COUPON TODAY? TABLE THAT BIG PURCHASE FOR A WEEK: A common practice for retailers is handing out coupons valid for a future date.  After a purchase is made, the sales person will hand out coupons that can be used towards a future purchase. These are great to keep handy if you plan on shopping at the same store in the near future, as the discounts are normally pretty significant. Why not ask if they are offering a coupon with a certain purchase price – might make sense to make a smaller purchase today and return to buy that dress or suit a week from now!
Prepare to save...Always have coupons handy and readily available.

Chrissy recommends a fun pouch, envelope or a printed mesh/organza bag (always fashionable!) that is offered free after a gift card or jewelry purchase has been made, to stay organized or...

COUPON ORGANIZING 2.0: Download the MyCoupons app for a free way to organize your deals - you also get alerts when you're creeping up on expiration date! http://www.mycoupons.com/coupons/myappbuilder.com

Live Review: AMI ClubWear Bikini Fashion Show @ Belasco Theater

The Belasco Theater in downtown Los Angeles was home to the AMI ClubWear Bikini Fashion Show this past Saturday. More than 1,200 attendees gathered at the historic, remodeled 3-story venue to dance, drink and watch beach bodied models grace the catwalk wearing the skimpiest bikinis ideal for summer. The fashion show was also coupled with a graduation celebration at the recurring club event, “Entitled Saturdays.”

If you missed the show, don’t fret. We’ve got video and photo coverage of the notable outfits. The first bikini to hit the stage was accessorized with knee-high stockings, a hat and a corset as pictured below.

A notable bikini to hit the stage was the pink striped swimsuit coupled with bows for a girly, flirtatious touch.

Another swimsuit that caught our eye was the bright green two-piece paired with green hair accessories to match. Girls can stand out by the pool wearing this outfit.

No pool is complete without the bright yellow bikini.

After an intermission where club-goers danced to pop-electro beats, the second half of the fashion show began. We saw bridal inspired bathing suits paired with tu-tu’s, veils and of course the classic white shade.

To see full coverage of the fashion show, see our slide show below:

Picture your favorite publishers showcasing the latest and greatest franchises in the video game industry. Companies go head to head displaying the biggest, loudest and brightest booths to hype up games that have yet to be released. You’ve got live demos, gameplay, trailers, booth babes and press conferences. Anxious gamers wait patiently in long lines for hours all for a chance to try out highly anticipated, unreleased games including Battlefield 3, Ninja Gaiden 3, Ghost Recon, Mass Effect 3, Metro: LastLight, Dead Island, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, among plenty of others. There’s press conferences and presentations from Nintendo, Sony Playstation, Microsoft’s Xbox360 and countless others.

One of the biggest announcements to come out of E3 was the new PS Vita, a handheld gaming device. Check out the E3 trailer here:

Of course, Nintendo also announced the release of their own WiiU to complement the Wii console. Check out their E3 trailer here:

As a newbie to E3, the experience was overwhelming and loud, in a good way. The event drew over 45,000 gaming enthusiasts to the L.A. Convention Center this past week. Trailers played on huge screens and enthusiastic fans rushed from one booth to another with bags full of free swag. With my exhibitor's pass in hand, I snapped photos as I walked around the Los Angeles Convention Center. Navigating through the massive crowds of game enthusiasts, I saw classic games from my childhood including Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario Brothers and Zelda. I was as excited as a kid in a candy store.

We learned that motion controlled consoles are blowing up. Check out photos of demos below:

Booths at the event were massive, clearly a sign that companies were trying to outshine each other. Check out Activision’s 360 degree display for the upcoming game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3:

Of course rivals EA were also on deck displaying Battlefield 3, Madden, Fifa and Star Wars Old Republic. I've got to say, their graphics were amazing.

Check out a video from E3 brought to you by the Battlefield crew. Even rapper Xzibit made a cameo at the end.

It was interesting to find out that people with Activision badges were turned away at the Battlefield 3 booth. See the proof in Tweets:

Of course, I couldn't leave without snapping a few photos with some of the characters at the event:

Majority of the time, I made my way from the South Hall to the West Hall at the convention center. I watched a ton of game trailers and felt timid to play the games out in the open since there was always an audience.
