Live Review: San Diego's FLUXX Club Offers Fun-Filled Sweet Shoppe Entertainment

Over Thanksgiving weekend, we took a break from our usual Hollywood/L.A. club scene and headed down to San Diego’s FLUXX on Saturday for our friend’s birthday. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by Sweet Shoppe décor reminiscent of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, except more colorful with a dash of playful, flirty feminine appeal. To top things off, the special guest of the evening was Rico DeLargo who performed live on trumpet alongside bass thumping beats courtesy of DJ Sid Vicious and G*Roy. The night, which consisted of a fun theme, live music, sexy bartenders, go-go dancers and a fun crowd, delivered the perfect recipe for an entertaining night.

Inside, we saw cotton candy trees, bubbles where girls danced inside surrounded by balloons and a large dance floor, which created a flirty, fun ambiance. For those unaware of Fluxx, the club was awarded "Best New Nightclub in the Nation" by Nightclub&Bar Awards 2011.

Check out our party photos from the venue:

Groups Launch Week of Calls to Senate In Opposition to Censorship Legislation

A dozen advocacy groups and Internet-based companies are encouraging their members to call Congress in opposition to pending Internet censorship legislation.

Internet users can visit www.AmericanCensorship.org for more information about the bills and to use a tool that makes it easy to call their senators.

Paricipants include many of those which spearheaded this month's "American Censorship Day," and have already driven more than two million emails and petition signatures to lawmakers, asking them to oppose the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA, S.968) and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA, HR.3261). Those bills would give the government and corporations sweeping new powers to censor the Internet; the PROTECT IP Act could see a vote in the Senate within the next two weeks.

Participating groups include Fight for the Future, Mozilla, MoveOn, Free Press, Public Knowledge, Stack Overflow, Grooveshark, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Demand Progress, and others.

According to Fight for the Future co-founder Tiffiniy Cheng, "The Chamber of Commerce, the Motion Picture Association of America, and Hollywood don't seem to care if most sites on the internet exist or if new innovations are allowed to happen. They are seemingly trying to nuke them all with their internet censorship bills, SOPA and PIPA."

She continued, "It's shameful that these groups are trying to exploit the jobs crisis to pass their bills, when PIPA and SOPA will actually kill jobs. At a time when our economy is really hurting, we need more tech innovation and jobs, but small and big businesses owners who depend on the Internet are all at risk if these bills pass, and that's why they're standing up against them."

Artist Spotlight: Hells Belles - Hollywood RAWards Performing Artist Semi-Finalist

This week, we're interviewing the RAWards Hollywood Semi-Finalists and today's feature is on Hells Belles, a burlesque troupe delivering seductive, edgy moves, loud rock/pop music and overall sex appeal. We interviewed Natasha Vee of Hells Belles where she discussed how they got their start, who they look up to and where you can catch them next.

Congratulations on winning the semi-finalist Hollywood RAWards spot in the PERFORMING ARTISTS category! How does it feel to win and what does this mean for you guys?

It feels fantastic! The most powerful thing about receiving an award like this is that it really reminds us of where we came from. We five ladies have been performing and dancing together for almost 7 years, and to go from 5 total strangers to Hollywood's "Performers of the Year," thats really amazing.

Who would you like to thank? Did anyone help you achieve this huge milestone?

I wish I had some romantic "thank you" speech prepared, but honestly, it's these five ladies, this family, that have built everything that we have. We've been through so much together, and have created not only a great dance troupe with a clear vision, but a really amazing business where we get to share what we love with hundreds of women. Each of us has a job in Hells Belles Burlesque, and we run our entire operation from choreography, teaching, marketing, newsletters, merchandise, everything, all by ourselves. These are some of the most talented. driven, and intelligent women I know, and for that reason I would say that we should all be congratulating ourselves for all our hard work.

Who comes up with your dance routines or is it a group effort?

I'm considered the choreographer for Hells Belles, but a lot of this particular piece was a group effort by Jaime, myself, and our good friend Duo, who is a b boy and hip hop dancer. The piece showcases chronological rock music and styles in the last three decades, so its constantly changing. Having a lot of voices and creativity made it fun, it's a bit of a rock-n-roll roller coaster!

How long have members of the group been dancing/performing?

We've all been dancing for the majority of our lives. I was a hard core ballerina, Breezsa was a gymnast and cheerleader, Ali is a fire dancer, Amy did musical theatre and Jaime was a competition dancer. We came together because we all loved burlesque, and we've been dancing together for almost 7 years. We practically grew up together, well not practically, we have!

Can you tell us about your first time onstage? What was the experience like?

Well, the first time I was on stage with these ladies, I remember it was at a bar in Santa Monica, CA. We did a rock-n-roll burlesque set and we stripped out of wife beaters or something. I'm not sure exactly what the choreography was, but I will say that none of us can listen to, "Shook Me All Night Long," by ACDC now with out laughing. It's always interesting doing burlesque with new dancers, you either feed off of each other's energy and sexuality, or it's awkward. I do think that our group had instant chemistry in the sense that we trusted each other's choices and could play off of each other easily.

What are some of your favorite songs to perform onstage?

Any really sexy rock song we've probably danced to at some point! We like to play with the the slinky and sultry of burlesque mixed with the harshness of rock-n-roll. Also some of the new pop songs with a burlesque vibe like Jessie J and Bittersweet are super sexy.

Do you have any advice for performing artists just starting out?

Know your worth. Too many people in this town try to get artists, particularly dancers, to work for nothing. Be professional, be organized, and be good at what you do and you can make a career out of doing what you love. But you have to set the standard. And above all, think BIG and always push forward.

What valuable lessons have you learned while being in the industry?

When you get organized, present, and conduct yourself as a professional company, people will treat you as such. We don't have a lot of patience for those who aren't professional when it comes to business, this isn't a game to us, it's our lives! As a performer you always have to protect yourself and make sure that you are being treated fairly, it's an unfortunate reality of the business that we're in. Contracts are important!

Who are some of your influences? Are there other performing artists you admire?

We are forever influenced by classic rock music and icons and the idea of the ultimate rock "video girl." We mix that with old hollywood glam, pin ups, and classic burlesque elements. The recipe for a Hells Belle is one part glam and one part rock: Marilyn Monroe meets Debbie Harry, Betty Page meets Joan Jett etc.

We love ACDC, Led Zeppelin, The Black Keys, Johnny Lang, Nine Inch Nails, and we LOVE a good rock n roll cover!

We've also been influenced by pop icons like Prince and Janet Jackson and movies like Dirty Dancing and Grease. We like to have fun with our routines, nothing is off limits! As long as there's sex appeal in the theme, we can make it something amazing.

Who would you like to collaborate with and why?

We absolutely love dancing live with amazing musicians.

Where can we catch you next? Any upcoming shows?

We perform every Wednesday night at the Townhouse Speakeasy in Venice Beach, and once a month at The Rainbow on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood.

All of our public show dates are always up on our website at www.HellsBellesBurlesque.com

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

We just want to raise our wine glasses and say thank you to everyone who supports us and what we do, our fans have allowed us to do what makes us so sublimely happy, and our little burlesque family could not be more grateful.

Artist Spotlight: Jillian Frederick - Hollywood RAWard ART Semi-Finalist

We recently caught up with RAWard Art semi-finalist Jillian Frederick and asked her about her art, goals and what it means to take home the art semi-finalist spot at the Hollywood RAWards showcase. Find out what inspires Frederick and what projects she's currently working on.

Congratulations on winning the semi-finalist Hollywood RAWards spot in the ART category! How does it feel to win and what does this mean for you?

Thank you! It feels so surreal. My art is what I spend most of my time doing, so being backed up by support and receiving an honor like this reassures me that I could only be happy doing what I love most. I felt a beautiful connection that night with the city I love so dearly.

Who would you like to thank? Who helped you with this milestone?

First, I would like to thank my mother and father. They have both worked so hard to make it possible for me to pursue my passion. They both inspire and motivate me to share my work. I'd also like to thank RAWartists for this incredible gift. It is hard to find reliable organizations that are truly about the arts, but they really are. Lastly, I wish I could hug each and every person who voted for me; It is really the most uplifting feeling to have both friends and complete strangers show interest in what I am doing.

How long have you been creating art?

I have been painting for about four years, but I feel like I truly found my "nitch" with Mixed Media within the last year or so. Once you find yourself within your work, it just keeps recreating itself from there.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by the harder times of my past and the ultimate decision of life vs. death I had to make that eventually lead to the happy and healthy life I lead now. I survived years of Eating Disorders, and there are personal symbols hidden throughout each piece that hint towards that. I examine both internal and external causes of such events like my own. My more recent work examines the body as a cage, and the soul of a woman being where her true beauty lies.

How would you describe your art to someone who has never seen it before?

Visually, I would say my work is made up of paper, paint, and any dusty treasures you might find in the attic of someone with a story to tell. I tend to work in earth tones with hints of vibrant colors. My sculptures are made of symbolic materials like mannequins, windows, bird cages, and other meaningful figures that work for the story I am telling.

Who are your influences and who do you admire?

My work was definitely influenced by modern artists like Joseph Cornell & Max Ernst. They helped me realize that no artist is limited to a certain media. I admire my mother, Vicki, who has won her battle with breast cancer and maintained her faith and composure throughout. I also admire my professor and friend of several years, Carol Bishop, who has seen my work progress and mentored me through finding myself through my work.

Do you have any artistic goals? If so, what are they?

I just want to make art my life. I am transferring to Otis College of Art & Design in the spring, and plan on obtaining my Masters Degree in Studio Art. I've always planned on volunteering my knowledge to the community through Art Therapy and would love to teach one day.

What lessons have you learned so far from the industry?

I've learned that not everyone will be spoken to by your work, but it should not stop you from showing your stuff to the people that are. I've also learned that the true test of your willpower comes down to your desire to keep producing; No one can motivate you as much as yourself.

If you could collaborate with anybody else, who would it be?

I would love to collaborate with Kiki Smith. My work tends to be classified as feminist in the sense that I acknowledge woman's struggles both self-fabricated and environmentally engraved in each of us, and I think she would be the artist to work with to portray that subject.

What advice would you give to an artist just starting out?

Nothing learned is ever wasted: each experience, every subject, all your memories, everything can somehow be useful for your work or helping understand the work of others. I would also let them know that both a healthy dose of encouragement and an even larger dose of criticism both go a long way.

Are you currently working on any projects?

Yes, my current series consists of using shadowboxes to display the lost selves of eating disorder victims through dark silhouettes and personal symbols.

Where can we see your work?

My work, contact information, & updates about upcoming shows can be found at: facebook.com/JillianFrederickArt.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Delivers High-Adrenaline, Action-Packed Gaming

We got a chance to review Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (MW3) before its official release date and we have to say, we’re impressed! The game was complete with cool graphics, (not as crisp as Battlefield 3), but it came with an engaging story and plenty of high-adrenaline, action-packed scenes, making it hard for us to put the controller down. Did we mention we beat the campaign mode in 7 hours? We have yet to test out the game's multiplayer mode, but we'll tell you what we think so far.

For the N00bz, we got some slightly bad news. The game starts off with lots of fire action and no “Hold My Hand” tutorial. This means you need to learn to survive and you better do that shit FAST. For most N00bz, the challenge will be figuring out how to naturally “move” in the game; that is going back and forward with the shooter and looking around at the same time. This does take some practice but with some patience and perhaps a few hours of game play everyone can quickly learn how to move like the veterans. Mastering the movement is only half the battle. You also need to learn how to shoot, ration your ammunition and last but not least think like a soldier, that is, take calculated risks.

You might have a hard time understanding what’s going on at first considering the “fast talking” nature of the characters in the game, but you will get a greater understanding once you progress in and move on to new chapters. In most cases, as long as you understand the mission and keep an eye on what your fellow soldiers are saying, you should be in good shape.

One of the shocking scenes of the game, almost as shocking as Dead Island’s trailer, was the scene consisting of a little girl in London playing with her family while on vacation, only to get blown away by a truck carrying explosives. Shocking? Yeah, we think so.

Besides shocking scenes, the game offers intense gameplay. We drove boats into planes, blew up submarines, shot people while in zero gravity on a plane and thrown into CRAZY circumstances which made the story line, gameplay and overall experience worthwhile. It was like being in a blockbuster action film.

Did we mention we beat the game in less than 7hrs and 20mins (one sitting) and we were really taking our time (you know enjoy the scenery and all)? Now, this might not sound like such a good deal considering the $100 price tag for the Hardened Edition but as all the Vets know, the real value here is the opportunity to repeatedly torture your friends and people worldwide in the online multiplayer mode while tracking stats on Elite's backend.

With the Hardened Edition you get Elite and the backbone of Elite is impressive, a true gaming revolution and new way to publicize your stats and quite frankly brag.

(NOTE: According to the official Call of Duty Elite Facebook page, the service is having some connectivity issues due to the surge of user registrations. As of 11.8.11, here's the latest status update:
Thank you for your patience while we are working to address the registration and log-in issues created by the surge of new registrants to Call of Duty ELITE. We’re making strong progress, with a 4x increase in registration capacity (and people registering per hour), but we will continue to work through the night on this, as well as meeting increased demand for stats and back-end data services.

Please be sure to check back tomorrow for more information, including an update on mobile apps. For the latest news, please follow @CallofDutyElite on Twitter.
One thing that annoyed us a bit, was the constant reloading of our weapons but perhaps it makes the game much more realistic... The reloading issue has a fun benefit: Have you ever shot someone’s head of or knifed them while they're reloading? This is kind of fun, especially in multiplayer mode.

Last Words: N00bz, it’s not too late to jump into the action. Don’t let the “3” intimidate you. You can easily enter into the shooting world with this game and you will have a blast. Veterans, you don’t need to be sold on this game, see you on the field!

You're probably wondering, "How does this game stack up against Battlefield 3?" While BF3 may have a newer engine, we’ve been told that “Battlefield is just the same as their last three games, they added jets, that’s all.” said long-time gamer Steven Patrick. “COD and BF3 are both good games, but different types of games as COD is more about close quarter combat and fast paced action, whereas BF3 is a “simulator” strategic game.”

Agree? Disagree? Check the game out for yourself and let us know what you think in the comments section.

Burberry Men's Seasonal Line Offers Fashionable Warmth

With the fall and winter seasons around the corner, it's time to check out the latest fashion trends that will keep you looking both fashionable and warm. Fall is the time when people tend to shift their wardrobes and bring out their coats, sweaters and hats. Every year, there's a new trend or two that tends to be quite noticeable, especially in men's fashion. This season in men's wear, it seems to be all about stylish outerwear, as bulkier jackets are replaced with trench coats, pea coats, and even scarves are being put to use more and more. Check out the Burberry men's seasonal line for some examples.

One of the top featured items in this collection as it is featured on my-wardrobe.com is the double-breasted pearson long coat, which is a very stylish, and very warm option. Try this coat with any jeans or darker pants for a smooth and confident look. Or if you're into something a bit less bulky, but still warm, take a look at the black packable trench coat, which offers a similar, but potentially a bit more casual, look. These are just a few of many examples of the stylish outerwear being offered by Burberry this season.

Grabbing a few items like those described above can prepare you for both the weather and will help you look your best. Whether you're looking for a thick coat, a padded jacket, or even just a sweater or set of scarves, you can find attractive options at a number of respectable high-end designers. With the help of some of these labels, you can be looking very sharp throughout the fall and winter seasons.

Live Review: Digital Hollywood Fall Conference

So much to talk about, so little time – this is how addicting this event was. The Digital Hollywood conference took place on October 17th-20th 2011 and was held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Marina del Rey, CA. This well attended event was filled with highly knowledgeable panelists along with a professional crowd including Aron Levitz, Peter Kang, Joyce Schwarz, and many more. Every day consisted of a strict back to back schedule, which literally kept you on your toes as you attended different panels in various hotel meeting rooms or pool-side.

A number of topics were covered including uber informative panels: 1) Roundtable on the Immersive Consumer Experience for the iPad, Tablet, Smart Phones and PC, 2) Advertising NEXT: Social Networks, TV & Video, Broadband, Mobile and Games 3) Advertising Accountability, 4) HyperAdvertising and 5) Facebook Factor, to name a few.

Here are our Top 10 favorite quotes from the event, in no particular order:

“We buy because of human psychology not technology!” Panel: Pad-Tablet-Smartphone-PC: Roundtable on the Immersive Consumer Experience

“There are more screens in the living room than cushions.” Panel: Pad-Tablet-Smartphone-PC: Roundtable on the Immersive Consumer Experience

“Facebook has less limitations and is therefore better than Twitter.” Panel: Facebook Factor
“Some people on Facebook don’t post about what they do; they just come in to play games.” Panel: Facebook Factor

“Geography is the most important variable when it comes to advertising.” Panel: HyperAdvertising

“Great advertising is based on great content.” Panel: HyperAdvertising

“Advertisers would love it if you keep all your cookies.” Panel: HyperAdvertising

“You can increase your ‘Likes’ but how that affects your sales is what really matters.” Panel: Advertising NEXT

“Data is the oil of the 21st century.” Panel: Advertising Accountability

“No movie wants to be a big social media hit; they want to be a box office hit.” Panel: Advertising Accountability

Wise words and humor made this a great experience for all entrepreneurs, some of which hung out long after the day session in order to network on the 1st floor enjoying the ocean view.

Discussion Highlights

Games on Facebook: Bust or Must
Who thought that games on Facebook could make games played on PS3 or Xbox a real competition? The Facebook magic is quite simple, social gaming! Sure you can play games with others on your gaming console, but when you are looking at the cost structure, Facebook’s model seems to be the winner over the old gaming philosophy, “pay to play.” When you can play for free, more people will give it a shot and since so many people give it a try, many of them stay engaged. It is all about just reaching critical mass. Nonetheless, gaming consoles are not likely to disappear in the next few years but neither is Facebook.

What Wins the Cell Phone Market Share?
Face it, people are obsessed with the cameras on their phones. The camera allows them to capture the moments in their life and then allows them to share those moments on various social networks. The phone with the best photo and video capability is likely to be a leader in the market. Not sure if all innovation in this space will propel your product to market leadership (such as 3D video) but as long as you can help people market themselves and the things they do in higher quality the more the people will demand your product.

Hyper Advertising? We can’t even get Advertising right.
There is a huge market opportunity in helping companies advertise better. The problem is that the advertising field evolves very quickly as technology advances. Fact is that there’s a lot of bad advertising out there, but with a strong content quality focus, all that advertising can improve significantly. The challenge is when you have a diverse target market. How are you going to customize your message to each group and how does that message change across different platforms like web, tablet and mobile? Geo Advertising has shown to produce great results directly impacting sales increases, but the challenge for monolith “big company” marketers is figuring out how their messages will change as national campaigns slowly get replaced (at least partially), by more local campaign efforts.

The Digital Hollywood conference was filled with great discussions that no article could do justice and that is why we highly recommend you head over to www.DigitalHollywood.com and sign up for one of the next conferences coming up in New York, Las Vegas or Los Angeles.
