This week's DJ Spotlight is focused on Los Angeles native Darin Epsilon. With his latest release, Perspectives Digital Vol. 3, Epsilon starts off moody and trippy and then progresses to an upbeat sound, taking you on a refined journey. Get to know DJ Darin Epsilon, his music and you may even find him featured in Paul Oakenfold's next compilation.
How long have you been performing? Do you play any other instruments?
I've been DJing for 11 years and my first release came out 5 years ago when I was 23. I grew up playing violin and piano, and tried teaching myself drums and guitar, but abandoned those once I bought my first pair of turntables.
Are there any artists you look up to? Who are some of your influences?
I'd be lying if I didn't include Paul Oakenfold as my primary influence towards the beginning of my career. I first discovered him around the turn of the century. A few years later, I was hugely inspired by Sasha & Digweed's set in Chicago during their Delta Heavy Tour in 2002. These days, I'm mostly following the sounds of Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren because they play elegant dance music without borders.
How old were you when you first started performing? Can you describe your first performance?
I was 17 and it was for a friend's house party. I had never been so nervous in my life! My hands were literally shaking, but I knew deep down that this was something I wanted to do. The mixing wasn't perfect but it turned out to be a really memorable experience. Everyone went home with a smile.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard it before?
Progressive house with lots of soul and emotion. Occasionally some influences from Tech House, Deep House, or Techno. It's music that not only sounds great at home but can also rock the club.
Do you have any advice for DJ’s just starting out?
Have confidence in yourself and don't expect to blow up overnight. You need to be prepared to put as much time and energy into your craft. Lastly, treat others the way you would want to be treated.
Are you working on any projects at the moment?
Always! I've got several projects in the works, mostly originals but also a few remixes. My next release comes out on Perfecto Records and Paul Oakenfold is including it in his next compilation.
Where can we catch you next? Any upcoming shows?
I just wrapped up tours in Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru, and the Dominican Republic. Now I'm prepping for my next shows in Kenya and Colombia.
What's the best piece of advice someone ever gave you?
Praise publicly and criticize privately. You never know who you might offend with what you say.
Where can people find you online?
Ahhh, that's an easy one. Best place to find me is on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/darinepsilonofficial or my homepage www.darinepsilon.com. You can also listen to my entire discography plus every mix I've ever put together on http://www.soundcloud.com/darinepsilon
Anything else you'd like to add?
Thank you guys for reading this interview all the way to the end!
