Filmmaker Spotlight: Mike Basone of "Life in Parallel"

This week's filmmaker spotlight is on Director, Writer, Producer and Editor Mike Basone of Life in Parallel. Basone's film was selected to be part of the NewFilmmakers Los Angeles screenings at Sunset Gower Studios this month. Learn about the film, his inspirations, goals and current projects.

Name/Position: Mike Basone/ Director, Writer, Producer, Editor
Film: Life in Parallel

Tell us a little bit about your project and how long you’ve been working on it.

Life in Parallel is the story of a young mans struggle to find his place in life. Through his passion of film he is able to figure out his priorities, and the type of man he wants to be.

My brother (Dan Basone) and myself began writing the film in January of 2010. Over the course of the next year we raised enough money to go into production,  which began during the summer of 2011. Post Production on the film was completed in March of 2012.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping out with this film?

My brother Dan Basone, along with my parents Mike and Pina Basone for their constant support and belief.

How does it feel to have your film part of the NewFilmmakers Screening at Sunset Gower Studios?

It feels great. I am a graduate of the Los Angeles Film School, but right now I am living back east, so to be able to come back to L.A. and screen my film in a town that taught me so much, is really cool. Plus, many of the actors and crew that worked on the film reside here. So it's going to be great to catch up with them and watch our movie.

What inspires you?

Who are your influences and who do you admire?

My filmmaking influences would have to be Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Edgar Wright, Jason Reitman to name a few. I like each for their originality and creativity. Who I admire, I would say my family.

What lessons have you learned from the industry so far?

If you could collaborate with anybody, who would it be?

My brother (Dan Basone). Right now we are writing our next feature which we are prepping for the fall of 2013.

What is the best piece of advice someone has given to you?

To believe in yourself.

What advice would you give to new filmmakers starting out in the industry?

Two things. First, create. If you want to make a film, make a film. Experience is the best teacher I've ever had.

Second watch our movie. Their are many lessons in the film that will be beneficial to young filmmakers. It's why we told this story. To help young filmmakers gain a better understanding of the process.
Where can we expect to see you next?

Life in Parallel will be screening for NewFilmmakers NY Dec 5th. It will also be screening at the Hartford Film Fest, Dec 6th. This January I will be Directing and Producing a Web Series titled "TERMINAL B."

BEAUTIFUL RIGHTS Gives Women’s Rights Some Real Lip Service

Beautiful Rights is here to give women’s rights some real lip service. This new, cause-driven makeup initiative, founded by renowned makeup artist and product developer, Kristen Therese Leonard, was created to ensure that women’s rights continue to be given their share of voice in our country’s future.

As we enter into 2017, real concerns regarding women’s rights are upon us. Beautiful Rights was created to remind every woman to speak up, and that the responsibility lies within each of us to protect the rights we’ve fought so hard to acquire.

Beautiful Rights will promote women’s rights by donating 20% of all sales (not profits) to organizations that support our causes, such as Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, Emily’s List, Lambda Legal and Legal Momentum. The 20% contribution is set as a reminder of the fact that women in the U.S. still get paid 20% less than men for doing the same work.

Not only will Beautiful Rights fuel great initiatives, it will also provide women with top-of-line…
