NewFilmmakersLA Spotlight: Interview with Director Carey Williams of Cherry Waves

This week's Filmmaker Spotlight focuses on Director Carey Williams, whose film is showcased at Sunset Gower Studios as part of NewFilmmakers Los Angeles. Learn about his film, Cherry Waves as he discusses goals and reminisces about making the film, lessons he's learned and where you can catch him next.

Name/Position: Carey Williams –Writer/Director
Film: Cherry Waves

Tell us a little bit about your project and how long you’ve been working on it.

The project is a narrative short film called Cherry Waves. We worked on the film for a year and half before finishing in June 2012. The film is the story of a young underground street fighter caught between continuing to fight to help financially provide for her handicapped mother or move on to a better life.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping out with this film?

I'm extremely grateful to my mother for indirectly providing inspiration for this story and equally grateful to the Kickstarter contributors for believing in me and the project as well as some very good friends that came through - Michael Dallatorre, Brad Clements, Aleshka Ferrero, Nick Towle, Kevin Kearney, Robyn Schnieders and Erin Sumner.

How does it feel to have your film part of the NewFilmmakers Screening at Sunset Gower Studios?

It's really great, I played NewFilmmakers with another short a couple of years ago and it was a wonderful experience. Really great films and the crowd was insightful and I made some great and lasting connections with people.

What inspires you?

I'm inspired by music.

Who are your influences and who do you admire?

David Fincher. Spike Lee, Steve McQueen, and Vince Gilligan.

What lessons have you learned from the industry so far?

Never give up. This industry is NOT fair. It's not nonsensical, but if you stick to your guns and never quit, you will make headway. Also, I've learned to let go of ego and treat people well and with respect. It makes a difference later.

If you could collaborate with anybody, who would it be?
Director – Fincher, even though I would be a nervous wreck. Music Artist – Bjork.

What is the toughest experience you've ever had to overcome?

It’s yet to come.

What is the best piece of advice someone has given to you?

Don’t beat yourself up for not being perfect. Admit and know that you are a human being and there is no perfect. And a producer once told me to learn how to edit because that way I would always have a job!

What advice would you give to new filmmakers starting out in the industry?

Follow your heart. Don’t listen to other people tell you how to make YOUR art. If you
have instincts to do something, do it.

Where can we expect to see you next?

Cherry Waves the short will be on HBO in February of 2013 and I am developing a
feature version of Cherry Waves.

BEAUTIFUL RIGHTS Gives Women’s Rights Some Real Lip Service

Beautiful Rights is here to give women’s rights some real lip service. This new, cause-driven makeup initiative, founded by renowned makeup artist and product developer, Kristen Therese Leonard, was created to ensure that women’s rights continue to be given their share of voice in our country’s future.

As we enter into 2017, real concerns regarding women’s rights are upon us. Beautiful Rights was created to remind every woman to speak up, and that the responsibility lies within each of us to protect the rights we’ve fought so hard to acquire.

Beautiful Rights will promote women’s rights by donating 20% of all sales (not profits) to organizations that support our causes, such as Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, Emily’s List, Lambda Legal and Legal Momentum. The 20% contribution is set as a reminder of the fact that women in the U.S. still get paid 20% less than men for doing the same work.

Not only will Beautiful Rights fuel great initiatives, it will also provide women with top-of-line…
